Social justice perspectives seminar, with Israeli and Palestinian human rights organisations

The deteriorating human rights and humanitarian law situation in Israel and the OPT:  What role for the Netherlands and the EU?

In light of a deteriorating human rights and humanitarian law situation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, shortly after the Israeli elections of 22 January and the Israeli military’s operation ‘Pillar of defense’ last November, the panel will discuss the situation on the ground, as well as opportunities and risks regarding the Netherlands and the EU’s relations with Israel and the Palestinians.

  • M. Shawan Jabarin, General Director of Al-Haq, based in Ramallah, Occupied Palestinian Territory.
  • M. Issam Younis, General Director of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, based in Gaza, Occupied Palestinian Territory.
  • M. Mahmoud AbuRahma, Director of Communications of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, based in Gaza, and member of the executive Committee of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network.
  • Dr. Ishai Menuchin, Executive Director of The Public Committee Against Torture, based in Israel.
  • Dr. Thabet Abu Ras Director of Adalah’s office in the Naqab/Negev, based in Israel.

Moderator:

  • Dr. Jeff Handmaker, Senior lecturer in law, human rights and development at the ISS and member of the teaching team in the ISS MA Major programme on Human Rights, Gender and Conflict Studies: Social Justice Perspectives.

Adalah, Al-Haq, Al Mezan and PCATI are members of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network’s working group on Palestine, Israel, and Palestinians dealing with human rights and international humanitarian law issues in that region.
