gate48 invites you to a program centering on Arab Jews in Israel. The program explores Mizrahi contemporary struggles and culture in Israel and in the context of the struggle against the occupation and regional war. Smadar Lavie, “wrapped in the flag of Israel”

Smadar Lavie is an Israeli anthropologist famous for her outspoken scholarship and activism for gender equality and social justice for both Israelis and Palestinians. Her latest book, Wrapped in the Flag of Israel, examines the life experiences and struggles of Mizrahi single mothers in Israel and connects it to social protest movements in Israel and the Middle East in the context of violence in Israel/Palestine and regional instability.

The new Mizrahim: the politics, music and cultural productions of the third generation of mizrahim in Israel is critically explored in connection to the struggle against the occupation. Presented by Hilla Dayan, co-founder of gate48.
